
A Hero-Based Co-Op Survival Roguelike Boss-Run Game Is Not What I Expected The Next ‘Elden Ring’ To Be
The recent reveal of Elden Ring Nightreign, a hero-based co-op survival roguelike boss-run game, has left me with mixed emotions. While it’s exciting to see a new game from FromSoftware, the direction taken by Junya Ishizaki, who is leading this project and has previously worked on numerous Souls games, seems to stray far from what I had hoped for.
The absence of a campaign mode and the shift towards a cooperative playstyle are significant departures from the Dark Souls formula that many fans have come to expect. The game’s focus on smaller, more bite-sized play sessions with friends is an intriguing aspect, but it’s difficult not to feel a sense of disappointment knowing that this isn’t the next installment in the Elden Ring series.
The new direction taken by FromSoftware raises questions about what lies ahead for the franchise. Will we see a return to form in the future? Or has the company moved on from their signature style?
Nightreign’s gameplay appears to be more accessible and streamlined compared to previous Soulsborne titles, which might appeal to a broader audience. However, I’m still excited to play this game despite my reservations. The inclusion of familiar characters and enemies is a welcome addition, as the Fire Keeper and The Nameless King both make an appearance.
As we await more information about Elden Ring Nightreign’s release date, I hope that it will be able to find its own identity and stand out in the gaming community rather than simply being seen as a departure from the norm.
