America Has a Drone Problem, and No One Is in Charge
As I write these words, reports are emerging of drone sightings over military bases and other sensitive locations in the United States. It’s unacceptable that we have a drone problem on our hands, and it’s even more disturbing that no one seems to be fully in charge of addressing this issue.
The recent incidents follow a pattern seen across Europe, where mysterious drones have been spotted at various military installations, including those hosting US troops. German officials have confirmed that similar sightings have occurred around the US airbase at Ramstein, while British authorities report similar occurrences over Royal Air Force bases.
While it’s unclear who is behind these incursions, there are suspicions that Russia may be involved in an ongoing espionage and disruption campaign to weaken NATO support for Ukraine. Whatever the motivation, however, the fact remains: we have a serious drone problem on our hands, and no one seems to be fully responsible for addressing it.
The Pentagon has already signed off on a counter-UAS strategy, but it’s unclear how much of that plan is focused on domestic operations. The defense bill for Fiscal Year 2025 may help, but much of the attention appears to be directed at overseas operations.
Meanwhile, US Northern Command (NORTHCOM) seems stumped by its role in defending against these incursions. While NORTHCOM has a critical mission protecting our northern borders from external threats, it’s unclear why they’re not taking the lead on this issue.
As we navigate the complexities of this situation, I must stress that leadership is key to solving America’s drone problem. Big decisions need to be made within the first few months of Trump’s new term to get a handle on this crisis.
I urge all lawmakers to put aside their differences and work together to resolve this matter.
