Title: YASA: UK Company Leading The Electrified Performance Car Revolution
YASA, a UK-based company, is revolutionizing the electric vehicle industry by creating high-performance electric motors. This innovative technology has already been used in hybrid supercars like the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB, as well as the Lamborghini Revuelto. What sets YASA apart is its unique approach to motor design.
The company’s name stands for “Yokeless And Segmented Armature,” which reflects their groundbreaking axial flux system. Unlike traditional radial flux systems used by other electric motor manufacturers, YASA does not use an iron core or yoke. This innovative design has numerous benefits, including a significant reduction in raw material usage and the potential to make vehicles even lighter.
“We don’t have downsides,” says Tim Woolmer, Founder and CEO of YASA. “You can take 200 kilograms directly out of a vehicle, which would be a real problem we need to deal with because electric vehicles are up to 400kg heavier than regular cars.”
YASA’s motors range from 100hp to 1,000hp, making them versatile enough to cater to various applications. The company has already developed custom solutions for its clients, such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. However, Woolmer emphasizes that YASA is committed to producing motors for all-electric vehicles.
The acquisition by Mercedes-AMG in 2021 enabled YASA to scale up its technology commercially. This partnership allowed the company to increase production capacity significantly, with a new facility in Bicester Motion worth £70 million. Furthermore, Mercedes’ investment has empowered YASA to develop and manufacture its technology on a much larger scale.
Despite being acquired by a German company, YASA will maintain its UK roots and continue to operate as a British-based business. The headquarters will remain in Bicester Motion, where the research and development of the technology takes place. While the Berlin facility will exclusively serve Mercedes-AMG, the UK location will produce motors for other clients.
YASA’s ambition is not limited to just producing high-performance electric motors but also aims to accelerate electrification as a whole. The company is already working on its next major breakthrough: in-wheel motor technology. This innovation could potentially transform the way vehicles are designed and has been showcased through Renault’s 5 Turbo 3E, a limited-edition series.
In conclusion, YASA stands out from other electric motor manufacturers due to its innovative approach, scalability, and commitment to electrification.
