Vitalik Buterin Sounds the Alarm on Sam Altman’s World
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has raised the alarm over Sam Altman’s digital identity project, World, warning that its one-person-one-ID model poses a significant threat to the core principle of crypto culture: pseudonymity.
World, previously known as Worldcoin, has experienced an impressive surge in adoption, boasting over 13 million verified “unique humans” through its controversial Orb-based iris-scanning technology. The project rewards users with a cryptocurrency token called WLD for biometric verification.
Although Buterin acknowledges the technical merits of the system, which utilizes zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to preserve privacy, he believes that the broader implications could be detrimental.
In a recent post, Buterin emphasized the importance of pluralistic identity systems. He argued that World’s rigid implementation risks eliminating pseudonymity, stating that it may force all online activity to fall under a single publicly known persona.
In the digital asset space, multiple wallets, usernames, and pseudonyms have become commonplace, offering privacy and protection in an era of heightened surveillance and geopolitical risk.
