
Jimmy Swaggart Dead: Televangelist and Gospel Music Producer Passes Away at the Age of 90
Renowned televangelist Jimmy Lee Swaggart has passed away at the age of 90. The late gospel music producer was known for his extensive work in the Christian music scene, as well as being a relative to several notable musicians.
Born on March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana, Jimmy Lee Swaggart was part of a musical family that produced two famous cousins in Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley. The rock ‘n’ roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis would go on to become one of the first artists to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
Jimmy Swaggart, who became a prominent figure in American Christian broadcasting, began his full-time evangelistic work in 1955. In 1960, he started recording gospel music albums and transmitting them on Christian radio stations. Following that, he was ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1961 and began his radio ministry.
Jimmy Swaggart’s impact on the Billboard charts cannot be overstated. Throughout his career, he managed to place four albums on the Top Christian Albums chart, with Living Waters reaching number 12 in 1984, followed by Jesus Just the Mention of Your Name at number 32 that same year, Sweet Anointing peaking at number 22 in 1985 and It’s Beginning to Rain hitting number 13 in 1986.
His legacy is not limited to his music releases. Jimmy Lee Swaggart authored nearly 50 books and countless study guides and commentaries on the Bible. These writings were distributed to millions of readers, further solidifying his influence.
