James Gunn Reveals His Lightbulb Moment While Writing ‘Superman’
During his recent conversation with io9, DC Studios president James Gunn shared a pivotal moment in the creation of his upcoming Superman film. The director’s inspiration for the movie came from an unexpected source – his own pet.
Gunn revealed that he found his creative spark by thinking about his dog. He wanted to bring a specific element into the story that would not only pay homage to DC Comics but also add a new layer of depth and complexity to the character. And so, Krypto, Superman’s trusty canine companion, was born.
The director stressed that having Krypto in the film allowed him to explore different aspects of the character’s life. “We’re always coming in [to Superman] on the spaceship crash lands, and then we see his whole family, and we’ve seen the beginning a bunch of times,” Gunn explained. “But this is not that. We’ve even seen a lot of stories that are after he’s married and what that life is like. But I wanted to see him in a different piece of his life, and I also wanted to bring the joy that I felt reading DC Comics as a kid into the movie.”
Gunn went on to emphasize how this new perspective will change the trajectory of the film and its storytelling approach. He revealed that he aimed to bring a magical world into movies through Krypto’s character, one that he experienced during his youth while consuming DC comics.
The Superman film is set to open in theaters July 11.
