In a recent interview with io9, James Gunn has shared the moment that sparked his creative approach to writing the upcoming DC film, Superman. As the president of DC Studios, Gunn has been keenly focused on crafting a unique and fresh take on the iconic character.
Gunn explained that he struggled initially to find his footing while working on the script for Superman, stating that it was “just difficult to figure out where I was going to come from.” However, an unexpected visit from his dog helped him find the key to unlocking the story. It was during this time with his furry friend that Gunn found inspiration in the form of a beloved DC Comics character – Krypto.
The idea of incorporating Krypto, Superman’s loyal canine companion, became the turning point for Gunn, allowing him to reimagine the classic superhero origin story. “I think it was the fun part for me because that was something we hadn’t really seen in a Superman movie,” he noted.
Gunn also expressed his desire to bring the sense of wonder and excitement he felt while reading DC Comics as a child into the film, highlighting the rich world of magic, monsters, and other fantastical elements. He made it clear that this approach will be significantly different from previous attempts at adapting the character on-screen.
