Cellebrite suspends Serbia as customer after claims police used firm’s tech to plant spyware
Security firm Cellebrite has suspended its services to the Serbian government after allegations surfaced that local authorities used the company’s technology to plant spyware on a journalist and an activist.
In December, Amnesty International published a report detailing the alleged misuse of surveillance technologies against civil society in Serbia. The organization claimed that the Serbian police had used Cellebrite’s forensics tools to hack into the cellphones of a local journalist and an activist, after which they installed Android spyware, known as Novispy, to continue monitoring their activities.
Following the release of this report, Cellebrite conducted its own investigation into the allegations, reportedly finding it appropriate to suspend its services to the relevant customers at this time.
