On a Quest to Revive the Woolly Mammoth, Colossal Biosciences Has Created a Woolly Mouse
Colossal Biosciences, a company on a mission to resurrect the woolly mammoth by 2028, has made significant progress in its quest. The biotech firm has successfully engineered mice with mammoth-like fur, a crucial step towards reviving the extinct species.
To achieve this feat, the company’s scientists found mouse versions of mammoth genes and utilized CRISPR to edit mouse embryos. These edited embryos were then implanted into surrogate mouse mothers. According to Dr. Beth Shapiro, Chief Science Officer at Colossal Biosciences, the woolly mice have been born healthy with the exact phenotypes that were predicted.
The newly engineered woolly mice feature a coat of a specific color, texture, and thickness that is reminiscent of a mammoth’s characteristics. Colossal Biosciences believes that this achievement will enable its genetically engineered mice to thrive in cold climates.
