Scientists Reconstruct Megalodon’s Body – and It’s Not What You Think
A groundbreaking study has just rewritten the rules of our understanding about the colossal Megalodon. Contrary to what many have assumed, this ancient predator was not a gargantuan version of the great white shark. Instead, new research reveals that it had a sleeker body shape, more akin to today’s lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris). The study’s findings suggest that Megalodon’s streamlined form allowed it to reach enormous sizes, whereas the stocky build of modern great whites limited their growth.
Led by paleobiologist Kenshu Shimada and a team of 28 researchers worldwide, this extensive investigation utilized an innovative approach, departing from previous studies. By analyzing body proportions across a diverse range of modern and extinct shark species, the researchers have been able to reconstruct Megalodon’s physique with unprecedented accuracy.
According to Dr. Phillip Sternes, “Our study has confirmed that O. megalodon was not just a gigantic version of the … [+] modern-day great white shark, supporting our previous research.”
