Cutting Industrial Emissions by Saving Energy—Heat Pumps to the Rescue
Innovative heat pump technology has been gaining traction in Europe as a potential solution to reduce industrial emissions and meet decarbonization targets. CEO of Enerin, Arne Høeg, emphasizes that if all European industry heating requirements were met with electricity, it would be impractical and expensive. However, by deploying low-temperature industrial heat pumps, the need for new renewable energy generation could be significantly reduced.
In a Horizon Europe project called I-UPS, Enerin has joined forces with KTH and the Kyoto Group to take industrial heat pump technology to the next level. This collaboration aims to create a device that can scale waste heat up to 400°C, addressing the needs of sectors that require higher temperatures.
The CEO points out that industries such as glass or scrap metal recycling, and potentially even cement production, require extremely high temperatures but could benefit from industrial heat pumps providing the first 400°C with the rest coming from direct electrical heating using renewables.
