Natalie Bergman has recently released her latest solo album, “My Home Is Not in This World,” a deeply personal and introspective work. The Chicago-based musician and producer opens up about the inspiration behind the album, which she co-produced with her brother.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Bergman reveals that the first song she wrote for the record was sparked by a loss of identity after giving birth to her child. “I couldn’t sing one note/How my aching heart had lost all its hope/until you give me a reason,” she sings in “Song For Arthur,” a lullaby inspired ode to the inspiration that her son has brought back into her life.
Bergman, formerly part of the brother/sister duo Wild Belle, found herself untethered from who she was as an artist after the birth of her child. However, it wasn’t long before she discovered her new identity as a mother and, in turn, finding a balance between that role and being an artist.
“I went through a period where I didn’t know who I was,” she shares with Billboard. “Then you also are confronted with the fact that ‘ok, am I still an artist if I’m devoting myself to my child? How can I also have the balance of being an artist?’ The answer for me is simply ‘I am an artist because I’m a mother.’ It’s a beautiful partnership.”
The album finds Bergman embracing her newfound identity and celebrating not only new life, but also saying goodbye to the past. She explains that this work is about finding one’s place in the world.
Bergman melds her love of soul and gospel with pop sensibilities on the record, creating an uplifting and hopeful work.
