Microsoft abruptly closes down its Xbox Movies & TV store
In a sudden and unexpected move, Microsoft has announced the closure of its Xbox Movies & TV store, effective immediately. The service allowed users to rent or buy movies and TV shows directly on their Xbox consoles or Windows PCs via the Microsoft Store.
According to an updated support page, Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase through its storefronts. However, existing purchased content will remain accessible in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows devices.
While it is no longer possible to acquire new movies and TV shows through this service, users can still access their downloaded content in its maximum supported resolution. Notably, there is currently no option to transfer these purchases to another platform.
Microsoft has also clarified that it will not provide refunds for previous purchases. This closure marks the end of an era for the company’s multimedia ambitions, as Xbox was once marketed as an all-in-one entertainment solution.
Interestingly, users in the US can still register their Movies & TV purchases with Movies Anywhere, a service allowing for cross-platform compatibility and syncing of registered content.
The development also highlights Microsoft’s shift away from its early vision to be an all-encompassing media hub.
