Microsoft Unceremoniously Kills Off Xbox Movies & TV Store
In a shocking move, Microsoft has decided to abruptly shut down its Movies & TV app, which was accessible on both Xbox and Windows PCs via the Microsoft Store. The service allowed users to rent or buy movies and TV shows directly through their console or computer’s storefront.
According to an updated support page from Microsoft, the company no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. This means that users will no longer be able to rent or buy movies and TV shows through the platform.
However, existing purchases will not be affected by this decision. Microsoft has assured users that they can continue to access their downloaded movies and shows in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows devices. The company also emphasized that these purchases will remain in their account and will still play at their maximum supported resolution.
It’s worth noting that there is no option to transfer purchased content to another service, leaving some users stuck with a single platform for their media consumption needs. However, Microsoft did suggest exploring alternative options such as Movies Anywhere, which allows users to register movies they’ve purchased on different storefronts and sync them across platforms. This service is available in the US.
The company has also stated that it will not be offering refunds on previous purchases. It’s unclear why Microsoft chose to end this service, but some speculate that the move may be an attempt to refocus its efforts towards more profitable endeavors.
It’s a sad day for fans of the Xbox Movies & TV store, as this marks the end of an era.
