Meta is facing a significant legal challenge in France as it has been accused of unlawful use of protected content to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models. The National Publishing Union (SNE), the National Union of Authors and Composers (SNAC), and the Society of People of Letters (SGDL) have jointly filed a lawsuit against Meta, alleging that the company has engaged in economic “parasitism” by leveraging copyrighted materials without permission.
According to reports, the case is believed to be the first of its kind against an AI giant in France. The publishing associations have made serious allegations against Meta, stating that the company has been training its large language models using unlicensed protected material, including books and articles. This is seen as a monumental act of “looting” by Maia Bensimon, general delegate of SNAC.
Renaud Lefebvre, director general of SNE, described the situation as a David versus Goliath battle, emphasizing the immense disparity in power between the two parties involved. The lawsuit aims to put an end to Meta’s alleged actions and ensure that the company respects intellectual property rights.
Meta has been approached for comment but has not yet responded.
