**The First Photo Of A Star Is 175 Years Old This Week**
As we commemorate a historic milestone in the field of astronomy, it’s essential to recognize the groundbreaking work done by our predecessors. 175 years ago this week, astronomers William Bond and John Adams Whipple successfully captured the first photograph of a star, marking a significant turning point in the history of space exploration.
In July 1850, Bond carefully positioned the Harvard College Observatory’s massive refracting telescope, known as the Great Refractor, on the constellation Lyra. His colleague, Whipple, then slid a chemically-treated metal plate into position within the telescope’s viewing end. For an arduous twenty minutes, they waited patiently for the light of Vega to imprint onto the plate.
