Tasha Cobbs Leonard is thrilled to share her genre-spanning first studio album “TASHA”, a fusion of worship with R&B, pop and hip-hop. The gospel singer-songwriter’s latest project, set for release on July 25, marks a significant departure from her traditional live worship albums recorded in churches and venues.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Cobbs Leonard revealed that the album was born out of a desire to explore different ways of expressing worship. Initially, she felt nervous about recording in a studio setting, but as she delved deeper into the creative process, she realized it was an opportunity to showcase her versatility.
The 15-track project features collaborations with some big names, including Grammy-winning singer John Legend and hip-hop artist Lecrae. The album’s lead single “Already Good (Tasha Slide)” is a slice of uplifting pop-R&B accompanied by the Tasha Slide dance challenge. Cobbs Leonard also invites fellow gospel luminary Kirk Franklin to contribute his vocals to one track.
Throughout the album, she draws inspiration from her personal experiences with anxiety and depression, as well as her journey through grief following a miscarriage. The project’s themes of faith, hope, and resilience have been woven into each song, reflecting the gospel singer-songwriter’s desire to craft an inclusive, genre-bending record that would connect with fans across various musical tastes.
While Cobbs Leonard remains committed to recording live albums in the future, she is now open to experimenting with both studio and live recordings.
