Galaxy Digital Moves $9 Billion in Bitcoin From Dormant MyBitcoin Wallets
Galaxy Digital has made a significant move by transferring 80,000 BTC worth over $9 billion from dormant wallets linked to the now-defunct wallet service MyBitcoin. According to recent reports, this transaction is being regarded as one of the largest Bitcoin transfers ever recorded.
As per available data, it appears that the funds were transferred on July 25. The firm has confirmed acting on behalf of a long-term holder who initially acquired these coins during Bitcoin’s early days. This notable transfer comes amid growing concerns about regulatory compliance and raises questions regarding the motive behind this massive transaction.
It is crucial to highlight that Galaxy Digital did not release any official statements confirming the identity of the wallet holder. However, blockchain analysts have been tracing the source of funds back to MyBitcoin-era wallets, which had remained inactive since April 2011. This development has sparked curiosity about the potential involvement of the hacker or the anonymous founder known as Tom Williams.
Interestingly, an on-chain message was embedded in the transaction metadata using Bitcoin’s op_return function. It appears that each recipient wallet received a symbolic unit of 0.00000113 BTC (approximately $13), which garnered attention from on-chain observers.
