AI Safety Clock Ticks Closer To “Midnight” Signifying Rising Risk
The world seems to be steadily advancing toward a risky AI future as the “AI Safety Clock” designed to track progress toward an uncontrolled artificial general intelligence has ticked closer to reality. Symbolically, we are now only 26 minutes away from “midnight,” a dire digital demarcation point when a UAGI could come online, causing computerized chaos.
To create an easy-to-understand model for critical discussions around AI for the general population, instructors at the IMD business school in Lausanne launched the AI Safety Clock in September. They note that as we get closer to midnight – the greater the risk becomes.
The team also evaluates risks based on the respective AI’s sophistication, autonomy and ability to execute its plans.
