The Magic of Magic City: Jermaine Dupri, 2 Chainz & More Celebrate Strip Club’s Legacy at Atlanta Docuseries Premiere
Last night, a bevy of celebrities gathered to celebrate the premiere of Starz’ Magic City: An American Fantasy docuseries. The event took place at AMC Madison Yards in Southeast Atlanta and saw notable attendees such as Jermaine Dupri, 2 Chainz, Young Dro, and others. The screening was held in conjunction with the strip club’s 40th anniversary.
The documentary series, which first premiered at SXSW in 2024, delves into the history of the iconic Magic City, a legendary Atlanta hub that has inspired countless artists across various genres. The docuseries is executive-produced by Jermaine Dupri and Drake, both of whom have publicly praised the club’s influence on their work.
As attendees watched the first two episodes of the five-part documentary series, the crowd took in the vibrant atmosphere as they indulged in food catered by Magic City itself. The evening concluded with an afterparty at the actual strip club, providing a fitting curtain call for the celebration and a testament to the strip club’s lasting impact on the city’s music scene.
The documentary is not solely focused on music, however. It also features stories from current and past dancers, tracing back their experiences and journeys dating back to the late 1980s, alongside interviews with the club’s founder and former owner Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney and his family.
As a testament to its significance, Magic City has been mentioned in songs like Tag Team’s platinum single “Whoomp! (There It Is)”, which was directly inspired by the strip club. Big Boi from OutKast also makes an appearance to discuss how Magic City served as a testing ground for their hit song “B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)”.
