Conservative commentator Benny Johnson sharply rebuked White House reporters during a press briefing, accusing them of spreading falsehoods about the safety of Washington, D.C. Johnson’s pointed remarks came as he addressed President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in response to soaring crime rates in the nation’s capital.
During the briefing, Johnson shared his personal experiences living in D.C., citing numerous incidents of violent crime that have shaken him and his family. “I don’t understand why you all keep saying it’s safe here,” he began, addressing the press corps. “You know, I was carjacked. I have murders on my ring camera and mass shootings. I witnessed a woman get held up at gunpoint for $20 on my block.”
Johnson then turned his attention to critics of Trump’s plan, which has sparked controversy among some residents who are concerned about the deployment of National Guard troops in D.C.
“You know what? To any reporter that says D.C. is a safe place to live and work, let me just say this: Thank you,” he said, addressing White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “Thank you for making the city safer. Because no parent should have to go through what my family went through having the fire department rip open our door to save their infant child.”
Leavitt later responded by citing a Washington Post poll that showed 65% of D.C. residents believe crime is a serious problem, echoing Johnson’s sentiments.
The heated exchange highlighted growing tensions between conservative voices and mainstream media outlets over coverage of crime in America’s capital city.
