Steam’s censorship issues have broken PayPal support in some regions
PayPal transactions for various currencies are no longer available on Steam due to the platform’s ongoing censorship issues. The issue is reportedly linked to Mastercard’s strict guidelines, which Steam has been forced to comply with.
Valve, the company behind Steam, announced that PayPal payments in certain regions have been disabled due to a decision made by one of PayPal’s banking partners. According to Valve, this partner had notified them that they would be terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam, effective immediately.
The issue affects multiple currencies, including those outside of EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD. As such, it seems clear that the decision is not solely based on geographical location but rather the specific payment methods being used.
It’s worth noting that this issue has been ongoing since early July 2025, with users first reporting the problem at that time. The company has stated that they are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and offer PayPal payments in unsupported currencies once again.
However, it seems likely that Steam will continue to face censorship issues, given the pressure from conservative activists who have called for the removal of certain games deemed too explicit or mature.
