Tesla offers free Supercharging for Model S with a catch
In an effort to boost sales before the end of the year, Tesla has announced that it will offer free Supercharging for its Model S cars. However, there is a significant caveat: this offer only applies to specific models and excludes certain buyers.
Initially, Tesla had abandoned its policy of offering free Supercharging for life in 2018, but it appears that the company is trying to revive interest in the vehicle by reintroducing the perk. However, the move comes with a hefty price tag – the Model S’s base price has been increased by $5,000.
The new starting prices for Tesla’s Model S are now $79,990 for the all-wheel drive version and $94,990 for the Plaid model. Despite this significant hike in cost, it remains to be seen whether the offer of free Supercharging will be enough to revive interest in the struggling EV.
Demand for the Model S has been steadily decreasing over the years, with estimates suggesting that Tesla sold only around 12,000 to 13,000 units in Q2 and an all-time low of roughly 10,000 units in the third quarter.
To qualify for the free Supercharging offer, buyers must agree to be charged a monthly fee of $100 per month. This payment is tied to the ownership of the vehicle, meaning that once the car is sold or traded in, the free charging perk will be discontinued.
