TikTok CEO Meets with Trump Ahead of January Ban
Washington – In a surprise move, President-elect Donald Trump has agreed to meet with TikTok CEO Shou Chew at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday. The meeting comes as the clock ticks down on a January 19 deadline for ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to cut ties with the popular social media app or face a ban in the United States.
Sources familiar with the matter confirmed the meeting, which was first reported by CNN. A spokesperson for TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the nature of the discussion.
In an earlier news conference, Trump expressed his admiration for TikTok, stating that he has “a warm spot” in his heart for the platform. The President-elect attributed this sentiment to the app’s role in his 2020 election victory, claiming it helped him win the youth vote by a significant margin.
TikTok and ByteDance have been working to delay the enforcement of a law passed by Congress, which requires them to divest or face a ban in the US. The companies had requested an extension from a federal appeals court, but their appeal was denied last week. TikTok has since asked the Supreme Court to temporarily pause the law and grant a 90-day extension.
In its filing with the high court, ByteDance argued that a sale of the app’s algorithm, which powers TikTok’s operations, is unfeasible and opposed by the Chinese government.
