Microsoft has responded to the growing concern among its user base by issuing a stark warning to 750 million Windows users who are yet to upgrade their operating systems. This comes after news broke that the company’s critical upgrades for Windows have essentially stopped.
The latest data reveals that October’s deadline for the massive number of users to upgrade to Windows 11 or face the risk of losing security updates is fast approaching, and it seems that the situation has taken a turn for the worse. According to Statcounter, the numbers are alarming, as Microsoft’s efforts to push users towards the new operating system have hit a roadblock.
It appears that the progress made in upgrading Windows 10 users had finally reached 50% after four months of steady advancement. However, this trend has recently reversed itself, leaving Windows 11 with only around 9% market share in both the global and US markets.
As reported by Windows Central, Microsoft has taken a more aggressive approach to encourage upgrades by threatening users that they will be on the “right side of risk” if they upgrade to Windows 11. This bold statement seems to have fallen flat, as many Windows 10 users continue to resist upgrading due to the significant cost and inconvenience associated with it.
The latest figures reveal that at least 240 million of these users are facing a dilemma, as their current PCs are not eligible for the free upgrade. The financial burden of purchasing a new laptop or upgrading an existing one is a major obstacle preventing many from making the switch.
As time runs out, Microsoft’s stark warning serves as a reminder to Windows 10 users that they must take immediate action to avoid losing essential security updates and potential threats.
