How ARIA Plans to Promote New Music With Major Chart Changes
In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the music industry in Australia, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has announced a major overhaul of its official chart methodology. The drastic changes, set to take effect on September 1, 2025, are designed to prioritize fresh content and stimulate the charts with increased movement.
In a bid to boost visibility for new music, particularly from Australian artists, ARIA will only include titles released within the past two years in its Main Charts for singles and albums. Meanwhile, all older releases will be migrated to a brand-new dedicated catalogue chart called ARIA On Replay.
According to CEO Annabelle Herd, the revamped system is specifically crafted to promote the work of local musicians and increase excitement around the charts. “More exposure for Australian artists. More movement. That’s what this is about,” Herd emphasized during an exclusive briefing with industry professionals and media representatives.
The decision to introduce a two-year eligibility window is expected to generate more turnover in the charts, thereby allowing emerging talent to gain greater prominence and visibility. This shift in strategy comes on the heels of a dismal year-end result for domestic artists, with zero Australian releases featured in ARIA’s Top 50 Singles Chart and only five local albums making it into the albums tally.
This significant restructuring is the most dramatic change made by ARIA since integrating streaming data in 2014 and adjusting weights to reflect the evolution of consumer habits.
